Ah yes. One piece of quite sad news (before Friday’s superb new BaneBeast) is that, thanks to various reasons that shall remain nameless lest we incriminate the innocent, we will now have to say goodbye to the splendiferous and verminous horror that is Three-Face. For a long time now, we have been needlessly talking about him behind his back, discussing his merits and deciding that, when all’s said and done, and at the end of the day, we think he’s a bit of a git – and that he just has to go. There’s not enough room in the world for Three-Face and us.
In short, we’ve been – wait for it, wait for it – two-faced to Three-Face!
Wahey! Never let it be said that we avoid obvious jokes… because we don’t! Sadly though, all joking aside, ’tis true – Three-Face, once the remaining stock of him has gone, will be gone forever, consigned to the graveyard of Old Miniatures for all time – although he may, one day, feature in some kind of museum or perhaps an article extolling his many virtues when we’re all famous and that. It’s been a bumpy, but fantastic, ride. Three-Face, we salute you!

Released on the 3rd of September, 2011

Ophius, the Gorgon Lord £39.99

It is foolhardy to assume that the Gorgonars, and their implacable lord, the Gorgon known as Ophius, are in any way a spent force. Yet there are still some who believe so. Their lands, as all learned men know, have all but disappeared; their civilisation, it is true, may now be marked only by vengeance and fury; their continued existence an anachrony, an evolutionary path that the earth has long since abandoned and wishes had devolved ages past. Yet still they trouble the Atalantians, and others, with their devastating raids, their spite, their sheer brutality. Ophius himself, in his more lucid moments, knows that the more they seek retribution the quicker they will destroy themselves - but equally, to him and his Gorgonars, there is simply no other path they can tread, no other way they wish to live. The followers of the Sun took their lives away from them; then they destroyed the lands they had promised. Ophius knew nothing but slavery and pain before their betrayal. Now he knows nothing but vengeance.

A Glimpse into the Future
Last week, when unveiling the superb BaneBeast Keirioc-cró to you all, we mentioned that we’ll be revealing a little of our plans for the BaneLegions range in the future. We don’t want to reveal too much – for the future is, as always, a little nebulous – but we’ll be telling you about some of the exciting miniatures planned for 2012 as well giving away a few snippets about where BaneLegions is going.
As a range of miniatures, the BaneLegions will expand greatly over the next twelve months, and you can expect at least one BaneBeast and at least one (probably two) BaneLord per month to be released in 2012, just like in the latter half of 2011. This means there’ll probably be around thirty to forty BaneLegions miniatures released in 2012 – which, at least for us, is a lot of miniatures! We are very confident that they’ll match and even surpass the quality of those released in 2010; obviously we can see the concepts and work in progress and you guys can’t – we generally work around three or four months ahead of the release schedule – but we’ll show you some of those miniatures nearing completion today, as well as quite a few concepts that will be turned into miniatures over the next year or so.

December
First up, let’s show you what’s around the corner in December.

We have Ckaarakk (pronounced Karak), Tain of the Tarvax, who looks simply superb; and Maru, a Swordtooth that is incredibly large – he fits on a 50x100mm base! These two will make great Christmas presents, hint hint…

Some Work in Progress

Once those have sunk in, here’s a couple of the 2012 BaneLegions work in progress eye-candy to drool over…

Eirik Longaxe – our first true Norseman – is virtually ready, thanks to the awesome Sebastian Archer’s very quick sculpting skills, so will probably be a January release; and Kraan shouldn’t be too far away either, as Kraan on foot is now complete. If you look further down this page you can see Kraan’s concept, and thus work out he’s actually a foot and mounted set. He’s actually my personal favourite and I can’t wait to see the supremely talented Jacques-Alexander Gillois finish Kraan’s bear…!

The BaneLegions range
After you’ve recovered from all that, note above that we said as a range of miniatures. What this oblique reference means is that BaneLegions is not just a range of miniatures; with a few exceptions, each miniature is a part of something greater, a race if you like (in some cases a faction within a race), within a setting that will, ultimately, be familiar to most. In short, If you read the background of each miniature we have released so far, you will find some clues as to which race or faction they belong to, but little more than that. We have been deliberately implicit. In this post, we’ll be a little more explicit – starting with the names of some of the races (and the factions within those races, in brackets) that will feature – at least initially – in this setting. These are, in no particular order, the Seaxons (Mercia); the Fomorians (Baalor); the Érainn (Uí Néill); the Albainn (Fortriu); the Norse (Scylfing); the Ysians (Ker-Ys); the Atalantians (Ilios); the Khthones (Gorgo); the Romani (Brython).
In stating these, you should be able to work out exactly why this setting should be familiar to most: it is our own. An alternate version, maybe, but it is still recognisable. For anyone who knows their history, they will understand that there are many other races and factions within this setting and period of history – and therefore, the above are simply the start.
Let’s go into a little detail with some of these races.

Seaxons (Mercia)
The fierce and brutal Penda the Bloody-Handed, King of Mercia, has fought against both his enemies and himself to become the pre-eminent power in Britain. As a direct descendent of Woden and ruler of the only Seaxon kingdom to stay true to the Old Gods, Penda believes that only he and his Mercians are strong enough to turn back the raids of the Norse, to fight against the incursions of the Fomorians, to resist the depradations of the Ysians in this age of darkness the Romani have created. The Christian kingdoms of the Brythons and the Seaxons are too weak; the Albainn too insular; the Érainn locked into a war they cannot win. Only Mercia can bring light back into the world.

Meloda, Warrior-Queen of Mercia; Cearl, Werwulf Thegn; Creoda, Gúthwulf

Norse (Scylfing)

The Norse, under their expansionist Yngling Kings, are raiding the coasts of Midgard more and more in search of plunder, land or even just for battle. Already the Seaxon kingdom of Bernicia pays tribute to the Scylfing King, Ingjald Anundsson, and it is only a matter of time before the longship raids – raids that bring Norsemen, Troll, Jötunn, Risar and many other foul giants of the northlands to war – strike against other lands of the weakling south and west.
Eirik Longaxe, Steersman of Hrafnen; Vörtun, Troll Jarl; Gjöll, Troll Vane-Bearer

Ysians (Ker-Ys)
The Ysians of Armorica are no longer bound just to that desolate and broken land, for the Merovingian kings now kneel to Euryalia, the Queen of Ker-Ys. The Ysians, with their degenerate fleshsmiths and theurgists, their drunes and aberrations, their mutants and vivicocts, have brought fear and loathing to the lands in the east and the seas in the west. The madness and depravity of a people without order or law, a ruinous anti-society that even mother earth turns from, is destroying and subverting everything in its path; for the lures of the cities of the Ysians, lures that have no bounds or rules, have a power that few can resist.
The Rose of Ker-Ys, Witchling; Ulric the Defiler, Autonomor;
Euryalia, Queen of Ker-Ys; Conjunct XIII, Vivicoct

Khthones (Gorgo)
The Khthones, once simply called the sklávoi, have taken advantage of the Atalantians’ hubris to rise against their former masters and break the chains of their slavery. Led by the implacable Gorgon known as Ophius, and counting among their number the Gorgonar, Krokodar and Sávrar – as well as other mighty beasts of Khthon – the ferocious savagery of the Khthones is only matched by their hunger for the downfall of Atalantia and its people. Their motivation is purely that of vengeance; whilst they will defend their crumbling lands against the raids of the Fomorians and the Ysians, as they have done in the past for their former masters, only the death of the Atalantian race – or, at the very least, their return to the stars – will satisfy the rage of the Khthones.
Ophius, Gorgon Lord; Vilthiss, Champion of Khthon; Issithill, Shrieker of Khthon; Svrill, Wielder of Khthon; Megálávra, Bull Krokodar; Vókkinak, Krokodar Blood Drinker; Kadámastar, Ancient Devourer

Ending Speculation
Now we’ve got all that out of the way, it’s probably time to end a bit of speculation we’ve read out there in internet-land. We are most definitely working towards releasing a skirmish wargame that will be appearing at some point over the next few years. We cannot say much more than that simply because we will not be restricted to any kind of deadline. It will be ready when it is ready, and not before. To be clear, most of the miniatures within the BaneLegions range will feature in this wargame, either within the races/factions mentioned above or others not mentioned; just not initially. We will not say which ones won’t, because (like all things) nothing is set in stone and, when all’s said and done, we do not wish to restrict ourselves to just the above setting anyway. If we fancy releasing a cool miniature that has no bearing on the forthcoming skirmish wargame, we’ll release it! So fear not, if your favourite BaneLord or BaneBeast is not listed above!
Phew!
Crikey! We hope you’ve found all this illuminating and interesting, and we also hope you’ll stay with us for the foreseeable future. There’s exciting times ahead, not least because there are even more surprises than the above in store for you all. We believe that one miniature in particular – almost ready for release – will have even more of an impact than the superb Terror of Fortriu; sculpted by the incomparable Daniel Cockersell, the mighty Krull will knock your socks off.
Until next time, keep it BaneLegions!

Maru, Swordtooth:
attachment.php

The giant beasts of the ice that live in the furthest reaches of the realm men call Thule - the Srónox, the Mammox and the Mallox, amongst others - have long been under the sway of Baalor, for the ice itself obeys his commands and such beasts live on his word; but few are as swift, deadly or as ferocious as the Feleox, the huge pantherine beasts that many call Swordteeth. They call them Swordteeth for two very good reasons - the sword-like teeth that sprout from their upper jaw, each almost two feet long and each capable of puncturing bone and armour alike. Yet Swordtooth is almost a misnomer, for it is their strength and speed that are the greatest threat to their enemies, and Maru is perhaps the quickest and the strongest, as well as the largest, of all his kind. A murderous killer in Baalor's name, a hunter of beasts without peer, Maru stands ten feet tall at the shoulder and as long again, a huge creature by any standard, but when he is unleashed upon Baalor's enemies in battle not shieldwall nor beast of war can stand against his ferocity and power.
Krull, Servile Lord of Dis:
attachment.php

Summoned and enslaved by the Magi of the immortal Emperor Constantine of Byzantia, the daemons and incubi and fiends of the unspeakable city of Dis and its environs have become the foremost threat to the world since their inclusion in the armies of the stone cities not a decade ago. The legates, increasingly greedy for power and glory - just like Constantine himself - are by now used to the sight of thousands of these despicable, unearthly creatures within their legions, and their effects on the legionaries and auxiliaries, for few armies can stand against such power; but none could ever be anything but aghast and terrified of the greatest Daemon yet enslaved, Krull. A mighty Lord of Dis and (it is said) right hand to Dispater himself, that the Emperor Constantine - admittedly the greatest Incantus of Byzantia - could bend Krull's will to his own ends only shows the powers inherent within him; or, many whisper, the desires of Dispater to influence the world of Man. Regardless of whether Krull appears by design or by servility, when he does, it is rare that the enemies of Byzantia do not quail in the face of such power, and rarer still that the legions are not the victors.
Eric Longaxe, Steersman of Hrafnen:
attachment.php

Seven foot tall and near as broad, Eirik Longaxe is almost as legendary as the longship he is steersman of, Hrafnen. A mighty Skei of sixty oars, Hrafnen bears the raven's head on its prow, a powerful symbol of Odin's favour and a reassuring presence to Hrafnen's crew - but a terror to the villages and towns that the mere sight of Hrafnen brings. Eirik himself believes that the wrath of Odin travels with him upon his raids, a belief that holds greater the further he sails and the more treasure he plunders, for he and his crew have always returned home, bruised and battered maybe, but always with gold and silver from the monasteries and halls and villages of the weaker peoples to the west. Indeed, such is his reputation in the shieldwall and on the seas that many other longships and steersmen are drawn to his banner, greedy to take a slice of the pickings from his raids and his battles, for all know that Eirik understands the sailing of all Midgard and where to strike for plunder like no other Norseman.
Ckaarak, Tain of the Tarvax:
attachment.php

Even amongst the Tarvax, those foul melds of bull and man that are increasingly found in Baalor's armies as the Destroyer moves ever southwards, Ckaarakk has a reputation for savagery and rage that none other can match. The nicks in his armour and the notches in his ax are testament to his prowess in battle, for few mortals can lay their blade upon him and even fewer can withstand the incredible strength of his blows, for Ckaarakk is by far the largest of his kind yet seen and easily the most terrifying. The pre-eminent Tain within the ranks of the Tarvax, when Ckaarakk appears in the battlelines of the Eye in the Ice, not man nor beast can fail to be intimidated, for the sight of his black armour and bloody ax and the sound of his roars and his snorts as he exhorts his bull-men to war are the heralds for the kind of slaughter upon the field of battle that few have seen before - or ever wish to see again.
