Borgward Wanze:
Warlordgames warten diese Woche mit einem etwas ungewöhnlichen Gefährt für ihre Late War deutsche Panzer Reihe auf.

As the sun set on Hitler’s Third Reich, the desperate German defenders converted Borgward IV demolitions vehicles into makeshift tank hunters. These small, tracked vehicles could pass where anti-tank guns and larger vehicles struggled to get through the rubble and battlefield debris in urban battles.

Newsletter 01.06.2012

Letzte Woche haben Warlordgames einen "M5 Stuart Light Tank" sowie einen "M5 A1 Stuart Light Tank" veröffentlicht.

The M5 light tank, nicknamed ‘Stuart’ by British troops in honour of the famous American Civil War General, J.E.B. Stuart. The first variant of the M5 saw a new, updated hull from that used by it’s predecessor, the M3, although it retained the same turret.

The M5A1 mounted a new turret on the M5 hull. The turret had the same 37mm gun as it’s predecessor but incorporated an overhang which housed the radio. This version of the Stuart was the main variant in service with US forces from 1943.

One of the most popular and recognisable anti-aircraft guns of WWII, the Bofors was used by many Allied and Axis forces. Often firing over open sights at ground targets as well as it's intended role as an anti-craft gun, the Bofors saw widespread use in the armies of Britain and her Commonwealth, in particular. So popular is it that the Bofors is still in service today!

The 7TP – 7 ton Polish – tank (an odd choice for name seeing as the weight increased to 9 tons after the prototype stage!) was the mainstay of the Polish armoured formations. This variant of the 7TP has two turrets, each mounting a wz.30 heavy machine gun. Just the job for mowing down Soviet or German invaders!

Designed in 1929, the Samochód Pancerny wzór 29 (‘armoured car 1929 pattern’), was more commonly known as Ursus or CWS. Based on the chassis of a 2-ton truck, the Ursus mounted a 37mm anti-tank gun and multiple machine guns. Although adequately armoured for the inter-war period, the Ursus was the poor relation when facing more modern opposition in 1939.

Auch diese Woche gibt es wieder einige interessante Neuigkeiten aus dem Hause Warlord Games.

Zum ersten Mal veröffentlichen Warlord Games unter ihrer Marke Bolt Action Miniatures einen Panzer, der während des zweiten Weltkrieges nie über das Planungsstadium hinausgekommen ist. Es handelt sich hierbei um den Flakpanzer V "Coelian".

Mounting twin 3.7cm flak guns in an enclosed turret, this proposed version of the Panther tank was designed to deal with the increasing danger to German forces from ever-dominant Allied airpower. The design didn’t reach production as the Panther hull was too valuable as a main battle tank. With Allied airpower all but supreme in the later years of the war, German requirements for better equipped anti-aircraft vehicles became ever more urgent. Rheinmetall-Borsig designed the Coelian – marrying a Panther ausf G hull with a fully enclosed turret mounting twin 3.7mm flak cannon. This would give the crews a larger degree of protection when taking on strafing fighters or marauding bombers. The Coelian would also be able to fire at ground targets… Although the design didn’t leave the drawing board due to the need to utilise all Panther hulls in their normal role – as arguably the best tank of the war – this model could form a great element of What If? games set in 1946 should the war have been protracted that long or in the Defence of Berlin during 1945 had the Coelian made it to production…

There are many suggestions for why the Wehrmacht adopted this halftrack/anti-tank gun hybrid. One such is that it was designed to fill a gap left due to not enough tanks or tank destroyers in the latter stages of the war. Another thought is that more mobile anti-tank weaponry was necessary to counter Soviet armoured thrusts. A direct replacement for the under-powered (by 1945) Sd.Kfz 251/9 Stummel is another idea for the inception of the Pakwagen. The truth may well incorporate all of the above.

Sensitively nicknamed ‘The Meatchopper’, this is, in effect, an M3 halftrack mounting the M45 Maxson turret (quad .50 cal HMGs…). Designed primarily as an anti-aircraft vehicle it also saw god use against ground targets where is was extremely punishing for those on the receiving end…

Analog to the twin-gunned M13 MGMC, the M16 went into production in May 1943. it was to see service well after the SecondWorld War, only being declared obsolete in 1958.

Officially titled the Ordnance Quick-firing 17 pounder, this excellent anti-tank gun was more commonly known as the 17 pdr. A 3″ (7.62mm) gun developed by the British it was arguably the best Allied anti-tank gun of the war, going to to be mounted in Sherman Fireflies, Achilles tank destroyers amongst others as the British tried to deal with the heavily armoured German tanks such as the Tiger, King Tiger, etc.

Um das Warten auf ihr neuestes Regelwerk "Bolt Action" noch spannender zu machen, veröffentlichen Warlord Games diese Woche ein weiteres Preview. Rick Priestley behandelt hier die Größe und Zusammensetzung der Armeen, die bei "Bolt Action" aufs Feld geführt werden. Zukünftige Generäle können dabei eine Vorahnung bekommen, was sie in naher Zukunft auf den Schlachtfeldern des heimischen Tabletops erwartet.

Although I write this before the official launch of the new Bolt Action game, a few advance copies have already found their way into the world, and I have noticed one or two short reviews elsewhere on the internet. Although these reviews are obviously based on a quick read through rather than play – for the moment at least – it is interesting to read these initial comments about the game. One thing that does seem to come up amongst the internet tittle-tattle is the size of the game – which some people describe as ‘skirmish’ whilst others plainly regard it as a ‘battle’ game. This is – of course – nothing but bickering over semantics – as what one person thinks of as a ‘skirmish’ kind of wargame another might consider a ‘platoon’ or ‘company’ action, or merely as a ‘small’ game.
Bolt Action is actually designed to play a wargame on a standard-sized table with sufficient 28mm models to make an entertaining game without undue crowding and without vast acres of tabletop going unused. When I say standard-sized table I mean 6 by 4 feet – as that is the sort of size most people have access to – and that is the size all of the scenarios are pitched at. Of course, we have made the game easily expandable, so it plays well with larger forces and on bigger tables – but we didn’t want to create a game where you needed hundreds of models, dozens of tanks, and tables twenty foot long and ten feet wide to play. You can play those kind of games with Bolt Action – indeed we have played those kind of games with Bolt Action – but we wanted a game that was playable within a reasonable time frame using a modest force that could be put together by a new player fairly quickly.

Mit der 2cm Flakvierling 38 gibt es starke Luftabwehr-Unterstützung für Spieler der Wehrmacht.

Effectively four 2cm Flak 38 anti-aircraft guns on one single carriage, the Flakvierling could lay down around 1400-1800 rounds per minute.
Normally towed on it’s trailer behind the likes of the Opel Blitz truck, Sd.Kfz 251 halftracks or halftracked prime movers, the Flakvierling was the Axis equivalent to the US M16 MGMC. The Flakvierling was also put to good use on mobile platforms such as the Sd.Kfz 7 where, on a converted chassis, it would become the Sd.Kfz 7/1 (we’re currently making this so keep your eyes peeled for it’s release…). It would also be found atop converted Panzer IV hulls as the Möbelwagen and Wirbelwind (yes, we are before you ask!).
The Flakvierling was put to good use in static positions and on armoured trains. The Kriegsmarine fitted the quad AA guns to their U-Boats and ships as short-range anti-aircraft defence as well as around harbours, ports and other key naval installations.

We all love to see and field armoured halftrack and hulking tanks in our German army but it’s an often forgotten that throughout World War II many German infantry divisions relied on horse drawn transport for their supply chain. THis was true in the early stages of the war where not enough mechanised vehicles could be made and though into the latter years of the war where Allied bombing made manufacture of such vehicles difficult and fuel shortages bit hard. As such it was the humble horse that keep the German forces moving from the beginning of the war to the end.
These field wagen were used not only to move supplies but also pull artillery pieces, field kitchens, ammunition limbers and on many occasions stacking with troops!

Although initially designed to act as an airlanded light tractor for airborne forces, the Kettenkrad was, effectively, a half-tracked motorcycle. This gave better performance off-road than traditional motorcycles. In fact, for extreme off-road conditions the fornt wheel could be removed and the Kettenkrad became a fully tracked vehicle.
Seeing service in 1941 on the Russian Front, the Kettenkrad was mostly used to lay communication cables, pull heavy loads and carry soldiers through the deep Russian mud. In addition to the Russian Front the Kettenkrad saw widespread service in North Africa, Italy and the Western Front.
As the war progressed Kettenkrads would begin to also be used as tugs for aircraft on runways, most notably the Me 262 as jet fuel was at such a premium the German Luftwaffe attempted to conserve it wherever possible. Over 8,000 of this distinctive vehicle were produced during the war.

First produced in the mid-1930s, the Panzer I was initially designed as a training tank as German forces developed the concept of armoured warfare. Going on to see action during the Spanish Civil War (the Spanish were still using it up until 1954!) as well as during World War II in Poland, France, the Low Countries, North Africa and on the Russian Front, the Panzer I was also in use by Chinese forces in their conflict with the Japanese.
Although thinly armoured and lightly armed with two machine guns, the Panzer I formed a large proportion of the German armoured forces as not enough of the heavier Pz III and IV tanks were supplied. The chassis of this light tank was developed further to become tank destroyer and assault gun variants.

The German Wehrmacht captured many French tanks with the capitulation of the French army in 1940. Early in 1941 an order was made to convert the Char B1 bis into a flamethrowing tank – the aim to have them ready to take part in Operation Barbarossa on the Russian Front.
Replacing the original hull-mounted 75mm gun with a flamethrower on a ball mount and the addition of a large fuel tank at the rear of the hull gave the Wehrmacht the vehicle they needed. Overall around 60 Char B1 bis tanks were converted into the flammpanzer.

Hierbei handelt es sich um einen IS-2, der ab Anfang 1944 auf sowjetischer Seite an der Ostfront im Einsatz war. Er zählt wohl zurecht zu den stärksten Panzern, die während des zweiten Weltkrieges gebaut wurden. Insgesamt wurden von 1944 bis 1945 3475 dieser schweren Monster gebaut. Wer sich näher über diesen beeindruckenden Koloss informieren möchte, dem sei der entsprechende "Wikipedia-Artikel" ans Herz gelegt.

Ein Erscheinungstermin bzw. ein Preis sind bisher noch nicht bekannt. Typisch für Warlord Games wird das Modell aber wahrscheinlich innerhalb der nächsten Wochen zu einem Preis um die 20,00 GBP im Webshop auftauchen.

Officially titled the Ordnance Quick-firing 17 pounder, this excellent anti-tank gun was more commonly known as the 17 pdr. A 3″ (7.62mm) gun developed by the British it was arguably the best Allied anti-tank gun of the war, going to to be mounted in Sherman Fireflies, Achilles tank destroyers amongst others as the British tried to deal with the heavily armoured German tanks such as the Tiger, King Tiger, etc

The Ausf D version of the Panzer IV was the first real production model with over 200 being built between 1939 and 1941. Remaining in service until 1944, the Pz.Kfw IV ausf D featured new front hull plate design (harking back to the design of the Ausf A) to accomodate the return of the hull-mounted machine gun and a new external gun mantlet.

Stillstand scheint es bei Warlord Games nicht zu geben. So gibt es auch diese Woche wieder viele interessante Neuigkeiten für ihre Bolt Action Miniatures Reihe.

Nachdem erst vor ein paar Wochen das "Bolt Action" Regelwerk erschienen ist, kündigen Warlord Games nun auch ein Starterset mit dem Namen "Assault on Normandy" an.
