The Custodian Guard

The Space Marines are not the only super-warriors created by the Emperor. The first group of genetically and psychiologically modified troops he created were his personal bodyguard- The Custodian Guard. Their duty was simply to ensure the safety of the Emperor at all times.

Stronger than a Space Marine, the Custodian is a fearsome warrior and has an unbreakable devotion to the Emperor. They are his most loyal and trusted servants. A detachment of the Guard alway accompanies the Emperor, even when he retires to his private chambers.

During this time of traitors and dissention, the Custodians are tasked with duties that now extend beyond these of guarding the Emperor's person. Small detachments of Custodians are frequently ordered to accompany the Legiones Astartes to ensure that the Emperor's will is followed.

The Custodian Guard is organised in a similar fashion to the Space Marines. The main difference between the Guard and a Marine Legion is the size of the formation, the Custodians numbering but a thousand warriors.

The Custodians have access to all of the myriad types of weaponry and wargear that are used by the Space Marines, including transport and fighting vehicles. They also have access to the Emperor's personal transports and battleships so that they can always be at his side.

In addition to the Marines' wargear the Custodian Guard also has access to a variety of weapons only they can use. An example is the Guardian Spear, a combination of boltgun and power axe, which is the standard armament for a Custodian Guard squad.

The Adeptus Custodes

The Adeptus Custodes forms the Emperor's inner guard whose duties are to serve and protect the Master of Mankind. A continuous rota ensures that there are always several hundred of these select warriors action within the palace, as well as a small elite of guardians who never leave the Emperor's side. Their uniforms are traditional but effective, leather breeches and boots with a long black cloak over naked torso. Their helmets are ancient works of art; all-enclosing and tall they impart a threatening, impersonal appearance as well as providing a battery of protective equipment and communicators. The weapons carried by these guards look very much like spears or spear- guns, but are in fact lasers build to resemble the traditional and symbolic guardian-spear which has long association with the Adeptus Custodes and which appears on their banners, badges and other regalia. The guards themselves never leave Earth, and only rarely leave the imperial palace where their duties lie - their place is by the Emperor's side.
