Where do I Start With The Protectorate?
The Protectorate of Menoth battle box is not a bad way to pick playing the Protectorate. It comes with one of our best warcasters,
High Exemplar Kreoss, and one of our best light warjacks, the
Revenger, though the other light 'jack, the
Repenter, is considered the worst light warjack in the game. The last 'jack, the
Crusader, is respectable, though most people do reach for other warjacks when considering heavies.
If you still want to start with the battle box, once you've got a few games in with it you'll want to start your additional purchases with some infantry. A good unit to start with is the
Choir of Menoth, a great support unit for your 'jacks.
Holy Zealots are one of the best infantry units in game when combined with their unit attachment the
Monolith Bearer.
Temple Flameguard are tough spearmen useful for soaking up damage that could go to killing less-durable units. When combined with their unit attachment
Preceptor and Standard Bearer, they become a useful offensive infantry unit as well. Completing the triumvirate of basic Menoth infantry,
Idrian Skirmishers can control vast tracts of the playing field with their Intercept order. When paired with their unit attachment
Chieftain and Guide they become especially effective against all types of infantry.
The Protectorate of Menoth also has a plethora of excellent solos.
The Wracks generate extra Focus for your warcasters,
Exemplar Seneschals are extremely powerful in melee and have the commander ability, and
Dartan Vilmon is simply one of the best solos in the game.
Rupert Carvolo is an excellent solo for buffing your infantry and is an auto-include in many Protectorate army lists. The
Vassal of Menoth is a warjack support solo and can often be found in lists featuring
High Executioner Reznik or
Amon ad-Raza.
Protectorate warjacks tend to vary in quality, though it is widely held that we have the best light warjacks in the game. Coming straight from our battle box, the Revenger is a tough arc node that is no slouch in melee. The
Redeemer is a keystone of the much-lauded Menoth Pop 'n Drop strategy and is often seen in armies with Kreoss. The
Devout, while not as durable as the Revenger, does an excellent job at protecting your warcaster while at the same time being an excellent support melee 'jack due to its powerful ability Defensive Strike. Protectorate heavy warjacks are mostly mediocre with a few exceptions. The
Castigator is excellent at taking out infantry swarms with its powerful auto-hitting Combustion attack. The
Reckoner, though expensive, is great at ripping through opposing 'jacks and 'beasts. Finally, our character 'jacks,
Blessing of Vengeance and
Fire of Salvation are definitely worth their points.
Protectorate warcasters range the spectrum from infantry commanders to 'jack casters to solo fanatics. The
High Reclaimer is great at commanding swarms of infantry while Reznik and Amon-ad Raza excel at commanding warjacks. The
Harbinger of Menoth best utilizes the Protectorates slew of support solos. Our other warcasters are generally more middle-of-the-road and require a careful balance of infantry and warjacks. Either way, the Protectorate of Menoth has enough warcasters to accomodate almost any style of play.
