Many thanks to oberst kramer for this information! He was at Games Day Spain and spoke to Phil Kelly about the new orks. Here's what he had to say - from The Waagh...
"Hello ladz! Well here's your favourite reporter returning from Games Day Spain 2006.
Well first to the important stuff which you'll want to know. I talked with Mr. Jes Godwyn first, which proved to be a hard nut to crack and had relatively nothing to say, so we shacked hands and everybody went back to his bussiness. the I directed my attention to Mr. Kelly, the main goal of my interviewing attentions. He works in the Game development department, so he should have more information about such matters like new codexes and stuff. So armed with my choppa and the bag of juicy squigs, my grot trascriptor and my camera carrying grot I went to his table. .
Mr. Phil Kelly was eager to answer my questions and was very enthousiastic about the matter, which encouraged me to find out more, and ask him as much as I could. I used most of the questions you posted in my other topic(thanks Tuff Git!).
Without further delay:
-When can we expect the new Ork Codex?
-About the end of the next year
-Can we hope on a Modular Vehicle sprue?
We have been working on new ork vehicles which will have lots of plastic sprues, and will be interchangeable between vehicles.
-Are we getting our own ork tanks then?
Could be, but I can't reveal anything. However the Battlewagon will get a subsatntial boost compared to now.
-Is the Stompa in the new Codex, will you release a model for it?
Although we would like to include Stompaz in the codex, the technological difficulties that imply such project make it difficult for us to produce a decent model to represent it. We would love to do it, but Stompaz are really big!
-Will the Squiggoth be avalaible for all orks?
- We will be leaving the Squiggoth as a Forgeworld thing. Although everybody loves Squiggoths, including myself, we didn't think that it would be appropiate as Forgeworld makes excellents models for them.
-Will we get Klanz? A Sublist, Doctrines, or a very flexible Core list?
Klanz will be definitly staying! Think it like this, we will use a system similar to the new panzee Codex, where some kind of units will become Troops as you include them in big amounts. You want an army full of bikes? you can do that. Looted vehicles? Also. By the way, the new Looters will be rockin' hard. They are a blast!.
-Plastic Warboss and Nobz?
No and maybe. Current Ork warbosses are very big and we didn't think we could make them better, and Plastic Nobs may be released, but I can't say anything more.
I hear that a lot of plastic will be redone. Basic ork Boyz too?
Yes, we wanted to add lots of charachter to the orks so we have redone them. lots of tiny details here and there. I'm specially fond off one that is a pile of empty shell cases and a string of emptu shell cases you can add to an ork firing his Big Shoota so it looks like he's really firing his weapon!
Will Brian Nelson do anything?
Brian is currently very busy with the Vampire Counts Army book. Seb Perbet is doing lot of the stuff. He's quite a new addition to the Studio, but he's getting very much in this army, very ork-like, and doing some brilliant stuff.
-{Phil Kelly said} There will be no Boars/Cyboars in the next ork Codex
To which I asked:
-Are we getting Squig Riders then?
-Squig riders? (face of surprise) I think that's more a Warhammer thing, don't know where you got that from(a that moment I mentioned the concept art). No, we don't have idea of including Squig riders, however we have thought to return some of the fun and comical orks of 2nd edition. Bikes will also get a renovation. They look very cool! (makes a vroom vroom sound)
-Does this mean we will see goodies like the Shokk attack gun back? Snotlings teleported into tanks?
-Might be, could be possible.(puts misterious face)
We chatted about some things more but the basics are here I think. Very nice guy in general.
About the interview, i was haapy to know more stuff, but I'm a bit confused about my Orky feelings. I'm definitly looking to a new Ork Codex, but the news that Brian Nelson won't be doing anything or very little saddens me. Seb perbet isn't a bad modeller, after all i think he did the Kommandoz and Big Mek, as well as the Nurgle daemon prince but well, I expected that Nelson orks would be back! Oh well, I'm still happy! "
My thoughts:
It looks like I was right about the klanz but wrong about the boyz plastics. Expect to see the new ork codex be flexible like the eldar one in that your Troop choices will determine your Klan.
I don't see any need for new boy plastics, personally. New plastic grots would be the way to go, I think.
Grots are a necessity for many ork armies. They help us not get shot up as bad on the long footslog in. Heck, most other 40K armies have 2 plastic Troops choices now! Let's go over the list, shall we?
Beekies: Both troops choices are plastic.
Panzees: Bikes, Guardians and heavy weapons, Avengers
Chaos: plastic chaos boyz, can make mutants and such easily, what else?
Necrons: one troop choice, but their good fast attack are plastic too
Tau: Fire Warriors and Kroot
Guard: plastic troops, what else Troop? Not much interest in guard.
Nids: Stealers, both gaunt types, rippers
I know I'm forgetting a bunch.
It looks like we are getting a new plastic biker model, which is good. That most likely can be used for Troops, like I thought. but if you don't want bikes...
I think the vehicles themselves will come out fine, the boyz I am praying hard to Gork and Mork that they will be good. The plastic fantasy gobbos and fanatics look pretty good by my estimation though. Please let Seb Perbet get a little better on the Orks! The plastic fantas orc warboss was okay, but Orks need more...
Seems like we'll be getting the following as new plastic sets:
Ork Boyz - unnecessary. A couple extra sprues of options is all that's needed.
Battlewagon - GW admitted that it will get better in rules, what better way to sell the new model? Necessary too.
Bikes - necessary.
Buggies/Traks - this one is a guess, but if we know that vehicles are supposed to be interchangeable, what else would it be?
Not sure of any other plastics. Any thoughts?
The rumors of 'humor' coming back scare me a little. If I start taking more damage from my dice rolling than from the enemy, I'm going to get a little more than miffed.
Humor is fine, but I want an effective army, not a joke.
I think that we'll be getting a bunch of new random shot and random strength weapons - the eldar lost theirs, guess who is the inheritor?
The shokk attack gun would be cool, as long as I don't need base after base of snots to power it.
Your thoughts, lads?[/b]
