Hi everyone, Something a bit different for you all this morning! My name is Dr Mike Ryder and I’m a lecturer based at Lancaster University (UK). My colleagues and I are planning to put on what we believe to be the world’s first Warhammer-related academic conference later this year, to take place at Heidelberg University (Germany). The event will be hybrid, so speakers (and other delegates) can also attend online. If you are an academic / independent scholar with an interest in Warhammer and the grim darkness of the far future then we’d love to hear from you! Our call for papers is now live on our website: www.warhammer-conference.com The deadline for submissions is 31st July 2024.

• Inventing the grimdark: how Games Workshop invented a whole new genre of art
• The real and the imaginary – real world decisions and the fantastical setting

Es sitzt ja auch ein Physiker im Organisationsteam. Ich vermute das würde gut ankommen.

Es ist schon interessant das Ganze, v.a. weil man ja sowohl ernsthafte als auch abgehobene Sachen machen könnte.

Interessant, ich bin echt gespannt, welchen input die so bekommen und wie das weitergeht. Auch ob/wie sich da eine Diskrepanz von Wissenschaft und Fans/Spielschaft ergibt und auflöst. Beide laufen ja schon mit einem unterschiedlichen mindset zum Thema rum.

Einfach ein "Thema einreichen", ist vermutlich hier im Forum einfacher, die suchen für ihre WH-Konferenz schon etwas mehr: papers, entries, also eher Aufsätze, Vorträge.
"We invite entries from all fields, including but not limited to: Philosophy, Games Studies, Literature, Politics, Science & Technology Studies or Theology."
Da wär schon etwas mehr Mühe nötig, als ihnen ein Thema zuzurufen.

Das meinte ich auch nicht. Denen einfach nur zurufen "hey, wie wäre es mit Thema XY?" is nich im Sinne der Veranstalter, klar.
Die schreiben ja, daß man da was mit max 300 Worten einreichen soll 🙂

There are some connections with the Heidelberg Apocalypse Studies project, yes. I'm not connected with it myself, but it just so happens that a few of our members are involved with it. What a small world it is! You're more than welcome to submit a paper. We're really excited to see what people come up with!

Will do! Our hope is that we can make it all available to non-academics as well. We are certainly also opening up attending to those who aren't presenting as the aim is to hopefully start up a bit of a community around this.

Thanks so much for your message. Yes indeed, it is open up to presenting online. In the submission form you can select your preferences (online, in person, or either). The philosophy of mind is perfect fit for 40k I think. The whole chaos-gods as reflections of the psyche is such an interesting area.

Thanks also for sharing the mailing list. I admit, I hadn't heard of it before, and I have a lot of contacts at Liverpool!

Er bestätigt dabei, dass man plant die Inhalte in Heidelberg auch Externen (non-academics) zugängig zu machen, und Übertragungen per Livestream möglich machen möchte. [Edit: Text angepasst damit die Übersetzung akurater wird]

Nicht "was mit 300 Worten", sondern ein abstract. Da müsste man also schon mal wissen, was man als Betrag liefert, um daraus ein abstract zu machen und sich damit anzubieten/anzumelden.
Leute, die Wissenschaftsjungs nehmen das Thema schon auf einem etwas ernsthaften Niveau in den Blick. Der Hobbyist könnte da trotz profundester Hobbykenntnisse überfordert, gelangweilt und enttäuscht sein, vermutlich in einer guten Mischung.

Falls du mich meinst Senex, definitiv. Ich hab da eher Soziolog*innen und Ehtnolog*innen im Hinterkopf, die sowas interessant finden KÖNNTEN. 😉

Ich sehe da schon Potential. Das verhältniss der Realität zu gigantomanischen Kriegsmaschinen könnte witzig sein. Titanen die im Boden versinken oder Raumschiffe die unter der eigenen Masseträgheit zerbrechen, wenn man die Triebwerke einschaltet.
Oder eine Machbarkeitsstudie zur Servorüstung? Langsam nähert sich die Technik da ja an.

Richtig und wenn sich keiner aus den harten Wissenschaften beteiligt, gestalten die Philosophen, Soziologen und Konfliktforscher die Agenda allein.... das kann nicht im Sinne des Imperators sein!
