Released now, these Early Egyptian figures can also be used for Egyptian armies of the First Intermediate period between the Old and Middle Kingdoms and the early part of the Second Intermediate period up to the native Egyptian 16th Dynasty of Upper Egypt.
Egyptian armies comprised equal proportions of archers and close combat fighters (axemen and spearmen), though they were organised into separate units. The archers did not engage in close combat but provided massed archery fire, softening the enemy lines, before the close fighters engaged the enemy in hand to hand fighting.
In addition, forces were further divided into the hereditary, retained or professional soldiers and the conscripts recruited from the various nomes, or districts of Egypt in times of war. The former were also known as Ahauty and in the case of the close fighters, as Menfat or shock troops.
The Pharaoh also had a personal retainer bodyguard of heavy axemen, also known as Shemsu.
Armies of both the Old and Middle Kingdom of Egypt also used native Egyptian light javelinmen and other auxiliary skirmishers in a supporting role. These included Nubian Archers, Libyan Javelinmen, and Amurru or Bedouin Slingers.
[h=2]Early Egyptian Retainer Axemen[/h]Guard or Retainer heavy two-handed axemen of Old or Middle Kingdom Egypt. These Retainers were also known as Shemsu and accompanied the Pharaoh or other Commander in battle. Although seemingly incompatible with the two-handed epsilon axe these retainers are armed with, they are depicted in reliefs with a huge body shield.

Out now for Beyond the Gates of Antares, we have reinforcements for the Algoryn Prosperate – the Armored Infantry squad, as well as X-Launcher and Plasma Cannon teams, and Targeter Probes…

Anhang anzeigen 242308

The Algoryn are a proud warrior race confronted on all sides by merciless and powerful enemies. Every aspect of their society is geared towards defending the worlds of the Algoryn Prosperate from the terrible threat that surrounds them. Engaged in constant warfare for hundreds of years, the Algoryn are naturally amongst the most battle-hardened troops in all of Antarean space. It is well for them that they are physically tall and robust, with tough protective scales upon their heads and upper bodies, a result of the mutating effect of their homeworld's erratic double suns that periodically spew searing radiation onto the planet's surface.

The Armored Infantry – better known as the AI – are the elite forces of their race. Amongst a people as proud as the Algoryn, it is esteemed a great honor to fight as part of the AI. They are the first to confront any enemy incursion and the last to abandon even the most hopeless of positions. They carry rugged, practical weaponry in the form of mag guns and micro-X launchers, whilst their leaders are armed with mag pistols and devastating X-slingers designed for short range fighting. Their armor combines lightweight armored plates and reflex field generators that enwrap the wearer from head to foot.
Contains the following metal models:

  • 1 Algoryn AI squad leader with mag pistol and X-sling
  • 3 Algoryn AI troopers with mag guns
  • 1 Algoryn AI trooper with micro X-launcher
  • 1 Beyond the Gates of Antares Orders Dice
Standing ready to support the AI squad, the X-Launcher team provides long-range indirect fire:

Out today are Thureophoroi and Thureophoroi command for Greek, Macedonian and Hellenstic armies.

Anhang anzeigen 242506

Mercenary troops formed a significant role in Hellenistic armies, and hired soldiers often served as garrison troops or wherever a permanent military presence was needed. During the third century BC, these troops are often referred to simply as mercenaries; but when they are called anything specific, it is usually thureophoroi – which means thureos-bearers. The thureos is the long, oval shield, which was probably adopted from the Galatians who invaded Greece and Anatolia in the early third century BC.

Thureophoroi wore little in the way of armor aside from a helmet, and were armed with a spear, and often with lighter javelins for throwing as well. They were clearly adaptable troops, capable of fighting at a distance and mixing it at close quarters, and no doubt their services were much in demand. From the middle of the third century, troops equipped identically to thureophoroi can be found in the Greek citizen armies, too. They were the go-anywhere, do-anything troop type of the Hellenistic age: adaptable, professional and practically universal.

The command set provides a determined sword-armed commander, accompanied by a standardbearer and a horn-blower:
