What kind of Rorke’s Drift set would this be without the characters from the 1964 film ‘Zulu’? We’ve included metal representations of the actors portraying Bromhead, Chard, Bourne and Hook.
There are even more resin additions to the camp – we have the cookhouse and it’s ovens as well as the WC outhouse. Cap this off with a metal water cart and wooden Boer wagon and you have everything you need bar the African sun and the chants of the impis!

So, we’ve had to increase the shipping costs to customers outside of the UK – select the relevant option in the dropdown menu in the webstore **
Preview: Painted Unmarried Zulus

We’re delighted to be able to show off the first fully painted regiment of our forthcoming Unmarried Zulus. Painted by Alan Mander these certainly look like they mean business.
attachment.php
attachment.php
We often get asked about the difference between Unmarried and Married Zulus. The easiest way to tell them apart is that the Unmarried are clearly happier whereas the Married hold little fear of death…
attachment.php
Each box comes complete with an Empress Miniatures metal InDuna.
Painted-Unmarried-Zulus-2.png
The four examples above have been painted by Andres Amian Fernandez. Andres have just delivered four examples of the Married Zulus so expect to see them in next week’s newsletter!
The first of our Anglo Zulu War plastic boxed sets, the Unmarried Zulus add a certain panache to the ranks of Cetshwayo’s armies. Wearing ornate headresses, cow tails leg and arm adornments and an eagerness to ‘wash their spears’ in the enemy they provide the British forces with a very real threat.
This set contains 32 multi-pose plastic Unmarried Zulus, a background leaflet and an Empress Miniatures metal InDuna to help focus their energy.

The Zulu army was a formidable foe. Well-trained, well-led, and well-equipped for campaigns, the Zulu regiments were the terror of Africa. Created by the great Shaka, founder of the nation, each regiment was composed of small companies who trained together, and a regiment could be 1,000 men strong. They were then brigaded together to form divisions that could move at great speed and with drilled precision, forming the classic Zulu attack formation of the Horns of the Buffalo.
attachment.php
The military system formed units into married and unmarried units, so a cadre of young men would be forced to remain unmarried on the King’s orders until they had “washed their spears” in the blood of their enemies. They are armed with throwing spears, smoothbore muskets and the deadly stabbing short spear whilst their patterned ox-hide shields help identify their parent regiment.
attachment.php
Once they were blooded, and only then, would they sew in the characteristic head ring which is the symbol of a mature and married warrior, showing his much enhanced status in society. These then are the finest warriors of a fierce and proud army of 40,000 men, eager to preserve Zululand from all invaders, Swazi, Boer or British!

Each boxed set comes with enough plastic components to make 32 Married Zulus, plus 1 metal Empress Miniatures InDuna on foot with several weapon options.

At the heart of the Rorke’s Drift set are the two main buildings – the storehouse and the hospital. These laser-cut wooden buildings have been designed and manufactured by our old pals at 4Ground. Each building is capped off with laser-cut ‘teddy bear fur’ which acts as thatch for the roof. The interior of each building is fully realised and even has wall sections that pop out to simulate firing positions broken down walls, etc. The roofs and upper floors lift out giving you total access to the building interiors. We’ve drawn on some of the most noted experts in the world in researching this set and what you have in the box is the definitive Rorke’s Drift!

Also included are several finely sculpted resin barricades. These are a mixture of biscuit boxes and mealie-bags and again we’ve drawn on eye-witness accounts and expert opinion to ensure we bring you an historically accurate rendition of the battlefield. A focal point of the defence were the barricaded wagons and we include this in the set also. The final resin components provide you with the stone wall Kraal.
Of course, you’ll need miniatures to fight over this amazing terrain and we include 20 of our brand new plastic multi-pose British Line Infantry and 40 of our new plastic multi-pose Married Zulu figures. The British are led by historical representations of the legendary Chard, Bromhead, Bourne and Hook whilst their Zulu counterparts are led by a mounted InDuna and there is also a metal Zulu wearing a looted British redcoat and firing a Martini-Henry rifle! The metal figures are all supplied by Empress Miniatures.
You can order this set now for £150. The resin components will be made available separately in the New Year some time but you save £52 against buying the contents of the box separately.
** Due to the sheer amount of awesomeness crammed into these large sets of Anglo Zulu War goodness the weight makes shipping them out very pricey for us. So, we’ve had to increase the shipping costs to customers outside of the UK – select the relevant option in the dropdown menu in the webstore **

New: Plastic Married Zulus!

The second plastic set for our Anglo-Zulu War range are these superb Married warriors. Lending their martial prowess to their recently released plastic Unmarried brethren, the Married Zulu regiment is now available to purchase.
For those of you who pre-ordered your sets, they will be sent out before anything else as befits your excitement in our miniatures – thanks!

New: More Anglo-Zulu War metals!

As we release more great Anglo-Zulu War products we’re also bringing you more metal models from Empress Miniatures. This week we’re adding three more sets to the range – check them out for yourselves here.
This 7 pounder of the Royal Artillery was one of two used at Isandlwana. It used a rugged carriage and could fire shell ball or case shot at close range. They would prove devastating at later battles.
These are the Heroes of Rorke’s Drift, or as Hollywood would have us believe anyway. The sullen but doughty Private Hook, the stoic but reluctant Lt Chard, the dandy English gentleman Lt Bromhead VC and the unflappable bayonet fighting Colour Sgt Bourne. Victoria Cross winners all.
These are the Native Horse; well-motivated men on wiry ponies and eager to have a go at their traditional enemies, the Zulus. Armed with breech loading carbines and a sheath full of assegais they are perfect for scouting ahead of the main British force.

New: Zulu deals!

With our great new plastic Zulu sets being released into the wild we have a couple of cracking deals to help you build your impis. Take a look at these offers and save yourselves a wodge of cash!
Isifuba – The Chest of the Beast

This army deal is a great way to get your Zulu army off the ground or add considerable numbers to your existing force. It consists of 5 regiments which will give you 160 plastic Zulu warriors and 5 metal InDuna leaders; certainly enough to trouble any enemy.
You are free to choose married or unmarried regiments, or a combination of both!
5 box sets of Zulus for £90 – saving you £10!
Zulus to the south west, sir -

thousands of them!

Well, a thousand of them anyway. Ever wondered what 1,000 plastic Zulu figures on a wargames table would look like – this is your chance to find out. Married, Unmarried or a mix – the choice is yours.
£500 (saving you over £60!)

New: Pike & Shotte Star Fort!

Our mate Paul McDonagh has been hard at work making us new scratchbuilt, ready-painted terrain pieces. The first of these is this amazing star fort. Ideal for use in games set in the Pike & Shotte era this provides a great centrepiece, objective or defensive position to fight over.
This is a fully assembled and painted gaming piece, that is ready from delivery straight to the gaming table, and no need to worry about the base as it felt lined to save damage on table and scenery.
You can purchase this terrain piece here in the webstore.
We’re also making the Star Fort available along with a goodly amount of ordnance – 4 Sakers cannons (you get to choose between Scots Crew or regular Pike & Shotte crew good for Royalist, Parliamentarian or the factions during the Thirty Years War).
Head to the webstore and pick up this fully painted earthwork today!

Pre-order plastic Anglo-Zulu War British

Whether you aim to build a force to represent the brave defenders at Rorke’s Drift or perhaps those fighting at Isandlwana, Ulundi, etc. these are the troop you’ll need! These plastic multi-pose Redcoats form a great-looking firing line – woe betide the Zulu facing these brave lads!
A casual look at Tommy Atkins of the Victorian period gave little away about his fighting abilities. Standing 5′ 5″ on average, and often shorter. He may or may not be able to read or write. This appearance was deceptive, however. The average British redcoat was the most dangerous animal in Africa, equipped as he was with the Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle capable of being fired 15 times a minute out to 1200 yards range in volley fire if needs be.
His discipline was legendary, his marching ability, enough to traverse all manner of terrain and his determination to fight his Queen’s enemies, which were legion, made him an implacable foe. Well led, well-equipped and thoroughly trained in his abilities, he blazed a trail for Empire all over the world. Cheerful, confident the redcoats of the County Regiments served their sovereign well, smashing their enemy by concentrated rifle fire and if necessary, selling their lives dearly with the use of their wicked long bayonets.
Our Redcoats represent any British unit of the Anglo/Zulu war. “Volley fire, at 200 yards. Present!..”
Box set contains enough plastic components to make 20 British Infantry with Martini Henry Rifles. We’ve included a Glengarry bonnet and a sun hat on the sprue but the joy of the seperate heads are you can choose how to attire your regiment and there are enough sun helmets to have the entire unit so attired – god bless Her Most Imperial Majesty’s Commissariat!
Also included in the box are 4 metal Empress Miniatures command figures – Bugler, Sergeant and two officers.

New: Imperial Roman Legionary Slingers!

It’s been a little while since our last Imperial Roman release so here are two-in-one! It’s widely believed that Legionaries were trained to use the sling. Whilst most players seem to field their slingers as Balearic or native auxiliaries we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sculpt slingers in segmented armour! So, where’s the two-in-one part? They come with arms holding gladius and pilum to allow you to mix them into your plastic legionary units if you prefer! Check the new models out below.
attachment.php
attachment.php

No lack of poses here! We’ve got Legionaries sculpted to represent each step of the action – from loading through to the actual release.
attachment.php

As well as being ideal for alternative models to Balearic Slingers in your army we have also included arms holding gladius and pilum so you can mix them in with your regular Imperial Legionaries to add even more variety.

New: Eastern Roman Watchtower!

The Eastern Roman Watchtower is painted and ready to play with straight out of the box.
This is a perfect base for your Roman Legionaries to hold off rampaging Sarmatians or Dacians and will look great with Eastern Auxiliary Archers mounted on the walls.

Following the release of Warlord sculptor Wojtek’s, Dwarf fantasy footballers (The Sister Sledgehammerers), our diminutive Polish putty-pusher has more fantasy nonsense for you! This time it’s a set of rather spiffing Dryads.
attachment.php

You never see bees in fantasy games and so, without bees to pollinate them, lady trees have to take matters into their own hands when finding a mate. Our Dryads have pulled themselves out of the ground and are looking for their ideal soul mate, a quest that has so far proved unsuccessful as most male trees just want to stand around with their friends all day discussing how much better things were in the old days. As you can see the Dryads are none too impressed with this…

Of course you could just use them to represent ferocious forest spirits in your fantasy army.
These fantastic models have been sculpted by Wojtek, once again proving he has too much spare time in the evenings. They have separate legs, bodies and heads allowing for plenty of variation in your units. Available now in our store!

New: Imperial Roman battlelines

Following last week’s release of our new Imperial Roman Slingers (which also have options of making them regular legionaries with gladius/pilum) we’re now releasing them in battle lines of either standing, or kneeling miniatures.
attachment.php

Each battleline contains 8 models which are either kneeling or standing – it’ll be your choice as you how you arm them from the various options in each set – gladius, pilum or sling.

We couldn’t do the Light Brigade (yes, the Hussars and Dragoons are already being sculpted…) without casualty models could we? If you’re as excited as we were when we first saw these you may need a stiff drink to calm yourself – a glass of port should do the trick, old bean.

It won’t be long before these superb sculpts are available to buy – you’ll find out first on the weekly newsletter…

Preview: Roman sentries

Fresh from Wojtek’s sculpting desk are these lovely sculpts. Depicting Roman soldiers on sentry duty they can be built to represent legionaries, auxiliaries or Praetorians.
These troopers can represent many things – fort sentries, soldiers on campaign in foul weather gear, sentries on ship, etc.
attachment.php

The sculpt on the left comes with two separate heads – one with auxiliary helmet and one wearing a legionary helmet. Of course it’d be very easy to attach a Praetorian or Veteran head from our plastic boxed sets or even swap them for optio or centurion heads.
attachment.php

As you can see the separate scutum shields can be attached in a couple of ways – either held up or resting on the ground. The models have been designed so you can swap the scutum for oval auxiliary shields or the hexagonal Praetorian/Marine shields. Loads of scope for conversions for these chaps…

Pre-order plastic AZW Natal Native Contingent

The latest of the plastic boxed sets produced in conjunction with Empress Miniatures is the Natal Native Contingent. You can now place a pre-order for these auxiliary troops in our store now!
attachment.php

The NNC were auxiliary infantry recruited by the British from friendly natives who had settled in Natal and were mortal enemies of the threatening Zulus. They were organised along regular British lines, in companies, battallions and regiments.
A company of these troop would have 90 soldiers armed with traditional spear and shield with one in ten also toting a rifle of sometimes dubious provenance. They were led by European officers and NCOs who would use their Martini-Henry rifles and bayonets leaving the rank and file to tough it out in their traditional way.
The quality of the units varied – some were ineffective, many deserted but others fought well and were invaluable in scouting and in mopping up operations where they excelled in the pursuit.
They distinguished themselves from the Zulus by the simple expedient of a red rag tied around their heads or arms.
The brave Swiss Cpl Schiess of the NNC won a Victoria Cross at Rorke’s Drift – lets hope your brave NNC do as well fighting for you!

Preview: Germanics

Renowned sculptor, Steve Saleh, has been hard at work revamping our Germanic tribesmen range.
Here’s a quick look at just some of Steve’s work…

These are just a handful of the new metal sculpts Steve has produced – there are already plenty more with a full range on the cards.

Several sculpts will have open hands so you can arm them in a manner of your choosing.
We don’t have a timeline for their release at this stage but you’ll find out about it on this newsletter first.

New: Plastic Ancient Greek Hoplites!

Another of the plastic sets we’ve revamped from the Immortal Miniatures range – this boxed set now has more models as one or two extras…
attachment.php

The hoplite phalanx was one of the most formidable fighting formations of the ancient world, enabling the Greeks to dominate the battlefields of their homelands and much of the Near East for hundreds of years.
Each hoplite was equipped with the best armour and equipment he could afford, which often gave the phalanx a rag-tag appearance. The front ranks were reserved for the wealthiest, and therefore best-equipped, men where they hoped to perform heroic deeds in their rich panoply, while the poorer labourers and farmers – arguably those most suited to fighting – took their place behind.
These figures can be used to represent the armies of the Greek city states and the mercenaries that fought abroad from the mid-6th century to the 4th century BC.
This box contains 42 hard plastic multi-part 28mm figures – 25 in linen armour, 10 unarmoured, 5 in bronze armour, 1 piper and 1 optional command model – and a sheet of full-colour waterslide shield transfers. Two arrow sprues, ideal for decorating the shields and bases, are also included.

New: Plastic Spartans!

With our acquisition of Immortal Miniatures recently we’ve spent some time reorganising the range for rerelease. The first to be reborn under our Hail Caesar range are the plastic Spartans. Have a look at what are arguably the most famous fighting men down the ages as they are available right now in our web store.
attachment.php

Spartan Hoplites were respected and feared throughout Greece, and it was long thought that no land power could stand against them. Lacedaemon, with Sparta as its capital, stood firm against the imperial ambitions of the Athenians.
The Classical period saw the height of Sparta’s power as well as its eventual downfall at the hands of the Thebans. This box allows you to build 40 Spartan Hoplites, wearing their distinctive Pilos helmets, long hair and characteristic beards. Also included is a sheet of waterside transfers with a selection of uniform lambda for the Hoplites’ shields, and two sprues of arrows to further decorate your shields and bases.
Now march on Athens and crush their oppressive democracy!

The new boxed set now contains 40 plastic Spartans, includes a full-colour shield design waterslide transfer sheet and we’ve also added in a bunch of metal arrows for you to glue into shield faces or the bases of your models to give them a real battle-hardened look – you can see how the arrows can be used by looking at our Imperial Roman Testudo which also incorporates the arrows.

Her Most Imperial Majesty, Queen Victoria has seen fit to defend her Empire’s holdings in Africa with a particular view to stemming the threat posed by the Zulu nation. Britain’s brave Redcoats are now available as a multi-pose plastic firing line! Whilst you are humming ‘Men of Harlech’ to yourselves, take a good look at the new plastics…
attachment.php

The boxed set contains 24 miniatures – 20 plastic multi-pose infantrymen, armed with Martini-Henry rifle and bayonet, and led by four metal Empress Miniatures command models – two officers, a bugler and a sergeant.
attachment.php

A casual look at Tommy Atkins of the Victorian period gave little away about his fighting abilities. Standing 5′ 5″ on average, and often shorter, he may or may not be able to read or write. This appearance was deceptive, however. The average British redcoat was the most dangerous animal in Africa, equipped as he was with the Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle which he was capable of firing 15 times a minute out to 1200 yards range in volley fire if needs be.
attachment.php

His legendary discipline, his marching ability – enough to traverse all manner of terrain – and his determination to fight his enemies, which were legion, all made the British redcoat an implacable foe. Well led, well-equipped and thoroughly trained in his abilities, he blazed a trail for Empire all over the world. Cheerful and confident the redcoats of the County Regiments served their sovereign well, smashing their enemy with concentrated rifle fire and, if necessary, selling their lives dearly behind the thrust of their wicked long bayonets.
Our Redcoats represent any British unit of the Anglo-Zulu War.
“Volley fire, at 200 yards. Present…”
